Origins of the Era System
The current calendar system in Eldrahn is divided into distinct Eras, each lasting roughly between 1000 to 1500 years. This structure arose from a significant event that all sapient species—including the Essin, Alfarii, Eldarii, Humans, and others—acknowledge as a turning point in history. This event, now known as the Cataclysm, reset the timeline to year zero, creating a common point of reference for all civilizations.
The Cataclysm
The Cataclysm marks a mysterious and devastating event that wiped out much of the world's previous history and knowledge. Scholars theorize various causes, ranging from a massive Etheric surge to divine intervention. Despite differing theories, there is a consensus that this event led to the need for a unified calendar system, starting at 1E 0.
Theories of the Cataclysm
The Ancient Prophecy Theory
- Date of Creation: 1E 578
- Details: Seeress Elowen Starshimmer proposed that the Cataclysm was foretold in ancient prophecies passed down through generations. These prophecies spoke of a great upheaval that would reset the world and pave the way for a new beginning. Starshimmer’s theory is supported by ancient texts and artifacts bearing cryptic messages and symbols that align with the events of the Cataclysm.
The Great War Theory
- Date of Acceptance: 1E 1200
- Details: General Tharek Grimstone argued that a colossal war between ancient civilizations brought about the Cataclysm. The conflict, fueled by advanced Etheric weapons and technologies, escalated to a point where the fabric of reality itself was torn apart. Evidence for this theory includes ancient battlefields, remnants of powerful weapons, and historical accounts of a great, all-consuming war. Grimstone’s theory also draws on military records and strategic analyses of ancient conflicts.
The Divine Intervention Theory
- Date of Acceptance: 2E 734
- Details: High Priest Kalendris Aelorian suggested that the Cataclysm was a result of divine intervention. According to this theory, the gods, witnessing the growing hubris and conflicts among the sentient races, decided to reset the world to give civilizations a second chance. This theory is supported by religious texts and oral traditions that speak of divine wrath and subsequent rebirth. Temples and religious artifacts from the time also reflect themes of renewal and divine punishment.
The Natural Catastrophe Theory
- Date of Acceptance: 3E 12
- Details: Geomancer Vaelith Stonewarden suggested that the Cataclysm was a natural disaster, such as a supervolcanic eruption, a series of massive earthquakes, or a planetary impact. Stonewarden’s theory is backed by geological evidence of sudden, widespread environmental changes around the supposed time of the Cataclysm. His studies include detailed geological surveys and examinations of ancient strata indicating catastrophic events.
The Great Etheric Surge Theory
- Date of Creation: 3E 987
- Details: Archmage Seraphi Elenwyn proposed that a massive surge of Etheric energy, possibly originating from a cosmic event or a natural fluctuation in the Ether, disrupted life and technology across Eldrahn. This surge caused widespread destruction, resetting history. Elenwyn based her theory on ancient ruins with signs of extreme energy burns and sudden destruction, as well as historical records of Etheric anomalies.
The Dimensional Rift Theory
- Date of Acceptance: 3E 1050
- Details: Professor Thandor Veilstrider proposed that a rift between dimensions opened, causing a catastrophic influx of foreign matter and energies. The resulting chaos led to widespread destruction and the erasure of much of Eldrahn's history. Supporters of this theory cite remnants of non-native flora, fauna, and artifacts that appear to have no known origin within Eldrahn. Veilstrider’s research includes detailed examinations of these artifacts and their potential extradimensional origins.

Significance of the Era System
Unified Historical Framework: The Era system provides a unified and coherent framework for recording and understanding history across Eldrahn. By marking significant transitions and events, it helps civilizations align their historical records, fostering a shared sense of time and continuity.
Cultural and Diplomatic Synchronization: The common calendar allows for easier synchronization of cultural events, diplomatic missions, and trade agreements. Regions can plan festivals, negotiations, and other significant activities around a shared timeline, enhancing cooperation and mutual understanding.
